Supporting the community during COVID-19: Letterkenny RFC

Numerous clubs and their members across Ulster are providing help to those in need in their local communities during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Letterkenny Rugby Football Club has teamed up with Letterkenny Gaels GAA club to co-ordinate support to vulnerable people in the area. Commenting on Letterkenny RFC’s volunteering effort, club Chair, Boyd Robinson said, “When the COVID-19 pandemic first started to take hold in Ireland, I noticed that a GAA club in another town was offering its services to support the community, which gave me the idea to contact Letterkenny Gaels GAA club and team-up to put out a joint offer of help on our social media. “Donegal County Council saw our joint statement and we started to work together; the council would contact us with different requirements for shopping for elderly and vulnerable people in the area. We run other errands too; there was an elderly gentleman recently who needed some petrol for his lawnmower which we were able to get for him. We’re also volunteering with our local chemist and have a team to deliver prescriptions. “As well as our volunteering services, the club has a monthly 50-50 draw with 240 people signed up to give €10 a month. Half would normally go back into the club with the other half going to the winner. In light of current circumstances, we decided to donate €1250 of the money to Lifestart Services which gives food to disadvantaged families to try and relieve the hardships they’re facing. It’s great to generate some goodwill in the community and I would encourage other clubs to do the same. “The feedback from residents in the area has been excellent. People are so grateful, not just for the deliveries but for the company; our volunteers stand at the gate, or at the end of the driveway, and chat for a few minutes while physically distancing. It can often make their day to have that bit of social interaction. “Every club should be helping their local community. When you have 150-200 members, it’s not difficult to co-ordinate a handful of volunteers who are more than happy to help. There really is no downside to people putting themselves forward and offering that kind of service to those in need. We have more people wanting to help than there are deliveries to make, which is fantastic.” If clubs wish to get involved, please check with your local council to find out what help is required in your area.
