The last time Ulster faced international opposition, it ended on a positive note as a youthful squad showed what they were capable of by defeating Portugal 62-6 at the old Ravenhill on 13th November 2008.
Openside flanker David Pollock, then only 21, captained a side that included the likes of Darren Cave, Ian Whitten and Robbie Diack, as the Province proved too strong for their national visitors.
Also in the starting team were former fan favourites such as Timoci Nagusa, Ian Humphreys, Declan Fitzpatrick and Filo Paulo, while the club’s current Operations Director Bryn Cunningham was at full-back.
Of the squad, only two players still play for Ulster today: centre Cave and flanker Chris Henry, who was among the replacements, leaving them the only members of the current squad who have experience of playing national opposition with the Province.
On the night, Ulster were far too good for their international visitors, who were led by Clermont Auvergne flanker Julien Bardy, scoring 10 tries on their way to a blowout win.
Cave bagged four of the tries, with wingers Mark McCrea and Nagusa also scoring braces, while centre Whitten and hooker Neil Hanna also crossed.
In previous years, Ulster have also played the likes of New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Fiji in Belfast. A collection of memorabilia, including match programmes, is available to view in The Nevin Spence Centre at Kingspan Stadium.
Against Uruguay, it should be another thrilling international match-up that will see the pride of Ulster tackle a rugged and determined side who are ramping up their preparations for the World Cup in Japan next autumn.
