Ulster lose Shield Final at World Club Sevens

Ulster produced an improved performance on day two of the World Club Se7ens at Thomond Park but ultimately fell short of glory in the Shield final, losing 33-17 to Leinster. Ulster found themselves in the Shield competition after a disappointing first day at the event, with a clash against San Francisco Golden Gate first on the docket. The American side established an early 7-0 lead in the semi-final but a beautiful show-and-go from Josh McIlroy on the stroke of half-time levelled proceedings. Straight after the break James Beattie demonstrated that he has pace to burn by going over in the right-hand corner before Chris Smith sealed a 17-7 win for Ulster with a jinking run as time expired. That set up a mouth-watering final with rivals Leinster, who beat Stade Francais 33-19 in their last-four clash. And the Dubliners carried that form into the derby clash as they raced into a 33-0 lead, leaving their opposition shell-shocked. But to their credit, a young Ulster team fought back as David McIlwaine, Aaron Cairns and Mark Glover all crossed the whitewash to restore some respectability to the scoreline - narrowing the final deficit to 33-17. While Leinster lifted the Shield, Buenos Aires won the Plate by beating Munster 43-19 in the final and Fijian side Daveta won the Cup for the second year running with a dramatic 19-17 triumph over Samurai 7s in the main event.
