Ulster Rugby Foundation | Dromore Rugby Club

Dromore Rugby Club has started its very first women's team, highlighting one of the Ulster Rugby Foundation's key priorities, making rugby available to all.

The Ulster Rugby Foundation, with its core value of making rugby accessible to everyone regardless of ability, gender, or age, is proud to showcase Dromore Rugby Club. Dromore have recently launched their first-ever women's rugby team, a huge moment for the club. We heard from Shauna, one of the club's players about what rugby means to her.

Where do/did you play rugby?

I currently play for Dromore women who are a brand new team that started in the summer. The idea was to have womens tag over the summer months however, it has really taken off and we are still going strong. We played out first friendly game a few weeks ago and won! (New recruits always welcome!)

Previous to that, I played for Lurgan Women.

What made you get involved in rugby?

I was going to work one morning and stopped to get petrol. I saw a leaflet about a women's team starting in Lurgan and I thought I would give it a go. That was nearly 6 years ago and I haven’t looked back.

How has rugby had a positive impact on your life?

I find rugby has helped greatly with my mental health. I would, and do, easily talk myself out of doing things or going places but if rugby is involved, Im there. I rarely miss anything rugby related. Wether its training, matches, watching friends play, helping around the club. Rugby has opened many avenues for me and I have truly found some of my closest friends from it. It has kept me busy which in turn has helped my mental health greatly.

Why do you feel rugby is unique, compared to other sports?

I think because it appeals to everyone. No matter your age, size, ability, there is always a spot for you on a rugby team. Due to the nature of the game and how its played, it really is a team sport, everyones position matters and its nice to know that everyone has your back and wants the best for you. I really love that after a game, everyone shakes hands and has a bite to eat together. Nothing is ever taken off the pitch and that’s just so special.

Would you recommend rugby as a sport for women & girls?

Absolutely! Its one of the fastest growing sports in the world and the likes of Ilona Maher is bringing so much attention to womens rugby at the moment which is amazing. Long gone are the days when women and girls couldn’t participate in everything that men and boys do. I love seeing new womens teams pop up all across Ulster. I would recommend any woman or girl to give rugby a try. There are many rugby clubs about who are supportive and fully back the females in the club. My only regret is now playing sooner!
