Ulster Rugby set to deliver range of health & wellbeing programmes

An innovative health and wellbeing programme will be delivered by Ulster Rugby, in conjunction with the Public Health Agency, as part of its 'Rugby at the Heart of the Community' Strategy.

The Public Health Agency has awarded Ulster Rugby a financial boost to deliver a range of health and wellbeing programmes that utilise the values and reach of rugby union to positively impact communities.

The project will provide a range of opportunities to young people, older people and females to engage in initiatives such as ‘UR Game’ and ‘Walking Rugby’ to promote improved physical and mental wellbeing, active ageing and social inclusion.

David Johnston, Funding Manager from Ulster Rugby said:

“We have been working closely with the Public Health Agency for the past 3 years in developing our health and wellbeing strategy and delivering a number of pilot schemes. This further support is a great stepping stone in ensuring we can continue to deliver impactful projects for our clubs and local communities and we are thankful to the Public Health Agency for this continued support.”

Laura Taylor, Health and Social Wellbeing Improvement Senior Officer with the Public Health Agency, added:

“The PHA works with a number of sporting bodies to address specific health and wellbeing challenges in the communities and clubs they work in. Ulster Rugby has been encompassing health and wellbeing as part of their core business in recent years. We are delighted to work with Ulster Rugby on new programmes which include physical activity and nutrition programmes for young people; a programme to re-engage older people in accessible safe sports and physical activity programme for the parents of players. We will also be working with Ulster Rugby to promote the Take 5 steps to wellbeing messages on maintaining and improving mental health.”
