Ulster take positives from day one of Limerick 7s

A young Ulster side battled valiantly but failed to record a victory in three attempts on day one of the Limerick World Club Se7ens at Thomond Park. With 12 teams from around the world competing in the competition, including all four Irish provinces for the first time, Ulster were drawn in Pool C alongside Buenos Aires, Golden Lions and Connacht but ultimately lost all three contests. They opened up against countrymen Connacht and although Aaron Cairns' first-half try kept them in the hunt, Marcus Mulgrew's late score was little more than consolation as the men from Galway ran out 36-10 winners. Game two saw Ulster take on Golden Lions and although Josh McIlroy's try from James Beattie's exquisite offload levelled proceedings at 7-7, the South African outfit dotted down on the stroke of half-time to establish a 14-7 lead. The Lions continued to roar after the break although Michael Lawton blazed clear for a late consolation to make the final score 28-12. And while a 24-19 defeat to Buenos Aires in the final Pool C wasn't the result Ulster were looking for, there were plenty of encouraging signs in the second half. Trailing 24-0 to the Argentines at the break, Lawton notched a try double either side of Mark Glover's score to add some respectability to the scoreline and give his side something to build on in the Shield tomorrow where they join Leinster, San Francisco and Stade Francais.   DAY TWO FIXTURES Shield 11:00 San Francisco v Ulster   11:23 Leinster v Stade Francais Cup 11:46 Buenos Aires v Samurai 12:09 Canadian Maples v Golden Lions 12:32 New York City v Connacht 12:55 Daveta v Munster 13:18 11th v 12th match 13:41 Shield Final 14:04 Plate semi-final 14:27 Plate semi-final 14:50 Cup semi-final 15:13 Cup semi-final 15:36 7th and 8th match 16:21 Plate Final 16:44 3rd v 4th 17:28 Cup Final
