The format of the match was three periods of 20/20/25 minutes.
The two teams seemed eager to play running rugby from the start but it was the Western side that scored first. A series of phases created space for centre Vicky Irwin touch down from a run from the half way line in which she beat three defenders. Helen McDermott converted to make the score 7-0 after seven minutes.
From this point the crowd knew this was going to be a very exciting game of rugby in Armagh Palace Grounds on this Spring Sunday afternoon.
The Eastern team responded with aggressive running from of Storm Cobain and Chantelle Asquith, while outhalf, Erin Caughey, was impressive. But the West held onto their advantage after the first 20 minute period.
The second 20 minute period started off with the majority of possession going East’s way, the West’s defence held firm. Players such as Laura Donnelly, Molly Laveryand Morna O’Hanlon put in big defensive efforts.
The last 25 minutes of the game didn’t see either team tiring as the dedication, determination and skill was evident through both squads. Rachel Tombs made a couple of fine breaks for the East side, but great leadership by Shannon Heaps kept the Westerners motivated. The hard hits continued right up to the final whistle, but the game finished 7-0 to the Western side.
