Volunteer Focus: Marc Eadie (Banbridge RFC)

Following on from Ulster Rugby's Volunteers' Week celebrations, we will be continuing to profile some of the outstanding rugby volunteers and highlight the tremendous work carried out by them.

In this week’s profile we will focus on Marc Eadie, Honorary Secretary of Banbridge RFC.

For the past 15 years Marc has served as a volunteer at Banbridge RFC, beginning during a playing career that saw him play for the club at U18 level, then work his way from the 5ths through to the 1st XV.

As Marc explains, volunteering was something that he felt an urge to do from an early stage:

“I decided to volunteer because I wanted to get an idea of how the club was run, and to see if I could help. I had seen the enjoyment taken by other volunteers who had given up their time to coach me and organise the various aspects of club activity.”

Marc took up the position of Honorary Secretary last year, which is one of the most important and demanding positions on a club’s Executive Committee. As Honorary Secretary, Marc is the principal administrator for the club and is responsible for the day to day management of club activities. He is the main communication link between the Executive Committee, sub-committees, Junior club committee, club members, other clubs, the IRFU and IRFU Ulster Branch.

On a daily basis, Marc will manage all club correspondence, delegating tasks and ensuring they are acted upon. He will organise the club’s AGM, general committee and other internal club meetings, preparing agendas and paperwork for each, as well as taking minutes. He has a close working relationship with the club’s Honorary Membership Secretary, Volunteer Coordinator, Ticket Administrator and Equality Officer, meeting frequently with each and reporting back to the Executive Committee on any matters of note.

In acknowledgement of the club’s outstanding public relations activity, Marc and Robin McGloughlin (Banbridge Media Officer) were awarded the 2016 Ulster Bank AIL PRO of the year.

Marc is very proud of the significant volunteer input at Banbridge, as he explains:

“Our club offers something for everyone. We have over 200 kids in the Mini Rugby section with volunteers who coach, assist coaches, cook snacks, makes refreshments, and some have even become involved in the club Junior Committee. We also have a Ladies Committee that is growing year-on-year with volunteers and is the envy of the land. As well as excellent pre-match receptions that they cater for, they also have outings, dinners, quizzes and other social events to help raise money for the club. The volunteer coaching at the club from Minis to Senior is excellent and is supported by outstanding volunteers at Committee level. There is a place for everyone at our club who is prepared to volunteer their time.”
