Wallace secure Danske Bank Subsidiary Shield victory

Wallace High School claimed the Danske Bank Subsidiary Shield with a strong first half performance against Down High in the Spring sunshine at Kingspan Stadium.

It was the first time the Lisburn School won the trophy out right having shared it in 1986 with Omagh Academy.

Down missed an early chance to take the lead when centre Charlie Power pushed a 3rd minute penalty wide.

Wallace took the lead on six minutes with their first attack, Down were punished for killing the ball on the ground and scrum half Jonny Stewart landed a penalty from just inside the 10 metre line.

Stewart missed the chance to double Wallace’s lead four minutes later but his penalty from a tight angle sailed wide.

Wallace got the game’s opening try on 22 minutes when they elected to kick a penalty into the corner.

From the resulting lineout No. 8 Gary Dillon made a break he was stopped short, the forwards worked the ball through a number of phases before Stewart picked up surging through a gap to touch down under the posts and he converted his own try.

Down High should have had a try following their first sustained period of pressure in the Wallace 22.

The forwards rumbled close to the line for a few phases before No. 8 Zac Ward, son of former European Cup winner and Ulster captain Andy, barged over but he was held up and from the resulting scrum Down conceded a penalty allowing the Lisburn school to clear their lines.

Wallace extended their lead in first half injury time with a second try.

Winger Josh Cardori made a break from his own half, he fed full back Kyle Hayes who carried deep into the Down 22 before cutting inside and offloading to centre  Johnny Hunter to dot down to give Wallace a 15-0 advantage at the interval.

Stewart added a penalty for Wallace six minutes after the restart following a dangerous tackle in midfield.

Wallace took advantage of more Down indiscipline as Stewart added another penalty on 49 minutes.

Down wasted another opportunity to get points on the board, they were awarded a penalty in front of the posts after Wallace prop Matthew Miller was caught offside, they kicked to the corner, from the line the forwards drove close to the line but the ball was ripped in contact allowing Wallace to clear.

Down eventually opened their account on 21 minutes into the second half.

They kicked a penalty for the corner, the forwards made the hard metres before prop Harry McCormick charged through a gap and swan dived over the line instead of going under the posts and centre Charlie Power struck the upright with the conversion.
