There is just one month to go before the top players in women's rugby descend upon the city of Belfast. Twelve teams from around the world will compete for the coveted Women's Rugby World Cup in the Final Stages of the competition on Tuesday 22nd August and Saturday 26th August at two iconic locations, Queen's University and Kingspan Stadium.
To celebrate this world-renowned competition coming to the Province, the Department of Communities and Ulster Rugby commissioned a unique exhibition celebrating the history of the Women’s Rugby World Cup since its inception in 1991. Housed within The Nevin Spence Centre at Kingspan Stadium, the educational timeline gives visitors the chance to find out more about the history of the competition, which was given official IRB status in 1998.
The exhibition also documents competition winners and showcases stand-out players in the women’s game. The Black Ferns from New Zealand currently hold the most number of titles, having lifted the Cup on four previous occasions. The current holders, England will be looking for their third title this summer, while Ireland will be hoping to achieve their highest finish yet, improving on their fourth place ranking in the 2014 World Cup.
The exhibition, which took five months to plan and design, was produced and installed by local companies Tandem and Marcon.
There has only been seven Women’s Rugby World Cup competitions to date and this is the first time that Ireland has been awarded the honour of hosting the competition. This exhibit is a positive extension of the education and heritage centre which is already in place at Kingspan Stadium as it gives the women’s game significant recognition in a year which is all about promoting and celebrating the sport of female rugby.
