Ulster Rugby is delighted to announce that James Hume, Ethan McIlroy, Tom O’Toole, Jacob Stockdale and Nick Timoney have signed contract extensions, committing their futures to Ulster until at least 2030.
All five have progressed through the Ulster Rugby pathway and Academy system, highlighting the province's commitment to developing homegrown talent.
Collectively, the five players have made more than 650 senior appearances, showing their experience and importance to Richie Murphy’s squad.
On the back of fine form in the white jersey - Tom O’Toole, Jacob Stockdale and Nick Timoney have seen increased international involvement this year, after playing important roles in Ireland’s Guinness Six Nations Triple Crown success and the Nations Championship squads.
28-year-old prop, Tom O’Toole, has earned widespread plaudits for adapting his game, playing a starting role at loosehead prop this year after playing at tighthead for most of his career.
Jacob Stockdale commits his future to his province as he continues to showcase his talent. The 30-year-old remains a standout player with his try-scoring ability on the wing and his versatility to play at full-back. In one of the most special moments of his career, Stockdale recently celebrated a milestone 150th cap for his province against Munster.
Regarded as one of the most underrated forwards in the game, Nick Timoney has established himself as an integral part of Ulster with his leadership, work-rate and dynamic ability in the back row. Primarily a flanker, Timoney has remained patient and seized his opportunity in the national side over the past year, becoming a regular feature in Andy Farrell’s matchday squads after pushing for opportunities in recent years.
Two of the most experienced players now in the Ulster senior squad, centre James Hume, and backline player Ethan McIlroy, have secured their futures with their home province.
Both have demonstrated considerable resilience in overcoming long-term knee injuries and returning to form.
28-year-old Hume is a core part of the midfield group at Ulster, with his work-rate, defensive reads and passing ability making him a standout midfielder.
26-year-old utility back Ethan McIlroy, proves to be a strong performer across the backline, showing his rugby IQ to perform at centre, wing and full back when called upon.
Excellent under the high ball, McIlroy has strong ball-handling skills and an ability to break opposition defences with his footwork.
Both players were recently named in an Ireland XV squad to face Fiji ‘A’ later this month in recognition of their talent.
Commenting on the latest batch of key renewals, Ulster Rugby’s General Manager, Rory Best, added:
“We are very pleased to have secured the futures of James, Ethan, Tom, Jacob and Nick for the next three seasons.
“All five play an important role in our senior squad with their consistency in performance and experience. They are an integral part of our team, and I know all five are extremely ambitious in their goals for the future.”
Best highlighted a key trait that he felt all five players possess, after suffering setbacks at different stages of their professional rugby careers.
“One thing that all these guys have shown – they are all remarkably resilient. Each of them has experienced ups and downs but have shown the mentality to bounce back and work hard.
“They are great ambassadors for Ulster Rugby and play with a commitment and passion that all of our supporters can resonate with.”
