There were mixed fortunes for Ulster’s two representatives in the Women’s All-Ireland Junior Cup. Malone unfortunately came up short across Navan at Gibson Park, leaving Queens to fly the Ulster flag after their win in Creggs.
Sunday also saw the opening round of fixtures in the Women’s Junior Cup as well as a full programme of fixtures in Women’s Championship A.
Last season Queens travelled to the Galway/Roscommon border and defeated Creggs in the quarterfinals of the Women’s All-Ireland Junior Cup quarterfinals, and on Sunday past lighting struck twice.
Queens took the game to their hosts from the first whistle, and they ruthlessly booked a semifinal spot thanks a 40-0 victory.
There was no such luck for Malone as they came up against a strong Navan team. Despite home advantage and a committed display, Navan moved into the semifinals thanks to a 73-5 win.
In the round of pool games in the Junior Cup, Ballymena avenged an earlier league defeat to Banbridge with an impressive 29-7 win at Rifle Park.
Clogher Valley also enjoyed a successful day on the road after they earned a 40-19 win over Virginia at Deerpark.
In Women’s Championship A, Letterkenny brought Omagh’s unbeaten start to the season to a crashing halt in the most dramatic of circumstances at Dave Gallaher Park.
Omagh got off to a flying start and two early tries helped the visitors to a 10-0 lead. But a Zoe Green try shortly before the break was just the boost the home team required. Zara Shortt’s conversion left just three between them at the break.
A third Omagh try looked to had sealed a third win from as many games for the Accies, but with 15 minutes remaining, Shortt went over to reignite Letterkenny’s challenge.
With the game on a knife edge, the game could’ve gone any way, it was Letterkenny who claimed the all-important final score through Caoimhe Rooney Friel with just three minutes remaining to seal a dramatic 19-15 win.
