The event runs from 2nd – 4th May with the following events:
Friday 2nd – u19’s tournament sponsored by Samurai
Saturday 3rd – Quigg Golden open
Sunday 4th – Manvik Qualifying League / Ladies Abbey sponsored 7’s tournament / Ladies development tournament
This year in line with the Ulster Ladies Committee, matches will be 7 a side rather than the normal 10 a side competition for the ladies tournaments, with the aim of encouraging participation in 7’s rugby in the run-up to the 2016 Olympics, where it will be introduced as a sport for the first time. As always Abbey Insurance sponsor this tournament, with £1500 in prize money being up for grabs. The entry fee for this will remain at £60 per team. There are currenyl 8 registrations for this tournament, with last years winners Queens determined to retain their title.
In addition there will be a brand new development tournament aimed at teams who are less experienced. This tournament will have no prize money, with the entry fee at £30 per team.
Squads for both competitions will be limited to a maximum of 12 players and upon the team being registered at the start of the tournament players will not be able to interchange amongst squads.
It’s a well-known fact that the Sevens is not just about the rugby, there will be four bars in operation during the day, along with around 800 patrons in the marquee at night, where there will be live music from Sunshine on Friday night, Fusion on Saturday night and Rumours on Sunday night. Teams are encouraged to soak up the atmosphere and make it a night as well as a day, as it’s always an excellent end to the season.
Carrick RFC are delighted to announce that the tournament will be supporting the Wooden Spoon Society, for the eighth year in a row, a charity which works with children with moderate and severe learning difficulties.
Thanks go to Colin Bell of Diageo; John and Heather Connor of Manvik; John Anderson of Overplay sports, Edward Quigg of Quigg Golden and Fraser Evans of Abbey Insurance, for their generous sponsorship of the individual competitions.
