Bank Of Ireland Towns Cup Final Match Report | Ballymena 2XV 22-38 Enniskillen

Enniskillen RFC has won the Bank of Ireland Towns Cup after a thrilling final victory over Ballymena 2XV at Kingspan Stadium.

The two sides had played out a hard-fought first half in Belfast which saw Enniskillen hold a 12-10 advantage, before an explosive start to the second period saw them score 14 points in four minutes to take full control of the final.

The Fermanagh club had set the tone with the opening try of the day coming in just the 3rd minute after a huge line break by Stevie Balfour.

From inside his own half, he made good yards before feeding James Ferguson who showed superb hands to offload to Angus Keys on a great support line. The openside drew his man as he entered the 22 and sent Sam Balfour clear down the right, with the winger making no mistake to race into the corner and touch down.

After just 15 minutes of play, they had their second after some quick thinking from influential fly-half Eddie Keys who launched a crossfield kick on halfway which was well gathered by Sam Balfour. He offloaded infield to Henry Keys to make it all the way to the 5 metre line before being hauled into touch.

Enniskillen managed to steal the lineout, and after a few quick bursts from the pack they moved it wide where Eddie Keys fed George Foster to nip between two defenders and score, with Keys converting.

The Ballymena forwards had been enjoying the scrums, and it was no surprise the set-piece was the source of their first try with 26 minutes played.

A succession of scrums had Enniskillen feeling the pressure, and the Ballymena pack eventually rumbled 10 metres to the line where number 8 Matthew Dick had the simple task of dotting down, with Joseph O’Rawe converting to make it 7-12.

Ballymena then enjoyed a more productive spell dominating the possession, and their eventual reward was O’Rawe landing a kick at goal on the stroke of half time to leave things finely poised.

However, Enniskillen absolutely flew out of the blocks in the second period and notched 14 points in a chaotic 4-minute window.<br>
From a breakdown on the halfway line, Angus Keys and Stevie Balfour combined well before releasing left winger Ben McLaren to show searing pace and tear away for the line and stun the Ballymena defence. Once again, Eddie Keys converted without fuss.

As the County Antrim club were still trying to compose themselves, Skins grabbed another try.

From just outside the 22 it was Eddie Keys who found Angus Keys on the full, and the openside cut a clean line to race clear unopposed and finish close to the posts, leaving an easy pop at goal for Eddie which made it 26-10.

It seemed to knock the wind out of the Ballymena sails somewhat, and Enniskillen soon grabbed another try with 55 minutes played.

A further period of sustained pressure saw Ballymena camped on their own line before Eddie Keys picked his moment to sling it wide to Sam Balfour to nip in for his second score of the final and give them a commanding 31-10 lead.

Ballymena battled back with 68 on the clock as their forwards once again made their power count as they mauled for the line with replacement Jacob Oliver getting the ball down.

However, any slim hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished as Enniskillen instantly hit back through Matty Dane as the scrum-half danced away from a couple of tacklers to create space and score, with Keys again converting.

As the clock ticked into the red Ballymena, to their credit, kept hammering away at Enniskillen and eventually captain Peter Wallace drove over to score from close range. O’Rawe knocked over his conversion, but it was little more than consolation.

Enniskillen’s surge at the start of the second half had done the damage, and they were duly crowned Bank of Ireland Towns Cup winners.
