Busy weekend of Girls Rugby!

Saturday 23rd September kicked off the first week of the 'Give it a Try' WRWC Legacy event at Kingspan for young female participants new to the game of rugby.

28 eager girls and their parents arrived into the grounds of Kingspan Stadium full of anticipation and excitement for the introductory session ahead.

Fun skills and drills challenges were led by Ulster Rugby Coaches and the girls had the added bonus of gaining top tips from last year’s U18 Interprovincial winners Hannah Beattie and Vicky Irwin along with Ireland Women’s star prop Ilse Van Staden.

The five week programme is an excellent opportunity for girls to get involved in the sport and is funded through Sport NI’s Everybody Active 2020 programme in partnership with Belfast City Council.

On Sunday Virginia RFC was the setting for a full day of exhilarating female sport, with just under 50 girls from 4 clubs across Ulster taking part in the season’s first U13 girls mini blitz. It was a fitting curtain-raiser for these buddying stars of the future to then witness the Ulster U18 Girls Interprovincial team convincingly win their opening game against Connacht.

Meanwhile in Portadown 63 girls were being put through their paces at the screening for the Girl’s Youth Regional Development Squad. While rugby playing experience was preferable, girls of any athletic background were encouraged to participate in the day and get a taster of what rugby is all about. These girls will form the basis of the Ulster U18 girls squad over the next few years, so watch this space.
