Chris Henry: On kicking off his 11th season with Ulster this Saturday

This Saturday, Chris Henry will lead the team out when they take on Gloucester in a pre-season friendly at Kingspan Stadium, in what will be the first event of his testimonial year. Hear his thoughts on the game that will kick off his eleventh season at Ulster Rugby...

We put a lot of hard work in to get ourselves physically right during pre-season, but ultimately we want to play rugby. Nothing can replicate a match so we can’t wait to get out there on Saturday.

No doubt both teams will be a little bit rusty at times but we had a really good contact session against each other last Thursday and you could see things were boiling up, so if that’s what it’s like against each other, I can’t wait to see what it’s like against another team!

I think we are in a great place, I feel we are ahead of where we were last year. The result in this game isn’t the be-all and end-all but the game is at home and we want to put in a good performance for the supporters and hopefully we will be on the right side of the result.

A lot of players will get the opportunity to put their hand up, and we know every minute counts when you’re out on that pitch.

Paddy McAllister will be playing for Gloucester and then David Humphreys and Jonny Bell will be familiar faces returning to Kingspan Stadium for this game in their coaching staff. It’s exciting to have them back and it adds another competitive edge to the match.

Gloucester are a quality team; they’ve got depth and have made some good signings. They probably underperformed last year, a bit like ourselves, so both sides will be looking to get stuck into each other and lay down an early marker.
