Danske Bank Schools' Cup: Round 2 Preview

The Danske Bank Schools' Cup continues with 6 games to be played in the 2nd Round.

The Danske Bank Schools' Cup reaches the 2nd Round this weekend, with six games taking place on Saturday the 11th of December.

The fixtures were drawn last month at Kingspan Stadium during this season's competition launch.

Each of the competing 32 schools was represented by their 1st XV captain, with the draw conducted by Kevin Heavern, Head of Marketing at Danske Bank, and IRFU Ulster Branch President Gary Leslie.

Danske Bank Schools' Cup - Round 2

  • Limavady GS v Lurgan College
  • Strabane Academy v Grosvenor GS
  • Regent House School v Carrickfergus GS
  • Belfast High School v Portadown College
  • Banbridge Academy v Friends' School
  • Dalriada v Cambridge House

Teams eliminated at this stage will go on to enter the Schools' Trophy, alongside Larne GS, at the quarter final stage. The draw for this competition will take place on Saturday, after these fixtures have been played.

Round 1 Review

As a result of the first round draw, Strabane Academy recieved a bye into the next round, with only one fixture taking place at the opening stage of this year's Schools' Cup.

Larne GS 14-20 Carrickfergus GS

In difficult weather conditions, it was the visiting School who progressed to the next phase of the Cup.

At the interval, Carrickfergus were 13-7 ahead thanks to a Levi Cave try which was converted by Ethan Law, who also kicked two penalties.

Larne's first half points came through a Beni Tasnadi try, converted by Robin Wynn.

In the 2nd half, Tom Kennedy extended the Carrickfergus lead, and Law added another conversion to make it 20-7.

Larne responded with a try from Jayden Martlew, converted by Wynn, but Carrickfergus held on for the win.

Round 3

Immediately after this Saturday's games have concluded, the draw for the 3rd round will take place. The 6 winning Schools will be joined in the draw by the following sides:

The draw will produce 8 fixtures [to take place on or before Saturday the 15th of January], with the winners progressing to Round 4. The 8 teams eliminated at this stage will play in the Bowl Competition.

Round 4

8 teams will progress from Round 3 and then be joined by the following 8 teams:

A draw will take place to produce 8 fixtures [to take place on or before Saturday the 29th of January], with the winners progressing to the quarter finals, to be played on or before the 12th of February. The 8 teams eliminated at this stage will play in the Subsidiary Shield Competition.
