Danske Bank U16 High Schools' Trophy | Craigavon Senior HS 30-0 Ballymoney HS

Craigavon Senior High School have won the Danske Bank U16 High Schools' Trophy after beating Ballymoney High School 30-0 in the final at Kingspan Stadium.

They ran in 6 unconverted tries to secure the Trophy, with fly-half Samuel Ruddell picking up the Player of the Match Award after a dominant performance in which he passed well and marshalled the backline with authority to see his School to victory.

They were led by James Beattie, who stood-in to captain the side in the absence of regular skipper Ted McQuitty, who missed out through illness.

It was Beattie who set up the first try, releasing Bailey Lappin to race to the corner and make it 5-0.

After a Ballymoney surge, Craigavon gathered the ball and quickly countered, eventually releasing fullback Ben Robinson who looked certain to sprint clear from halfway and finish, only to be stopped short by a superb cover tackle by AJ Beech.

However, Craigavon soon had their second try when Ruddell passed to Matthew Givan close to the line, and the inside centre smartly stepped inside to cross and make it 10-0, with no further scores coming before the break.

The third was scored by captain James Beattie, who crashed over after a cleverly worked tap-and-go penalty routine deceived the Ballymoney defence.

A good kick from Ruddell then put his school deep into Ballymoney territory, and following a good break by right wing Jacob Farr, the forwards worked through a few phases before Beattie barged over for his second.

His score made it 20-0 and capped a fine afternoon for the tighthead prop, who had carried and passed well throughout the final.

Ballymoney had been forced to work hard in defence and break on the counter, but soon found themselves down to 14 when Jack Pearson was shown a yellow for collapsing the maul.

Craigavon made their numbers count right away, and from the following lineout, the forwards quickly recycled the ball for number 8 Alfie Thornton to drive over and score.

Replacement Aaron Conn then rounded off the scoring for Craigavon when he gathered a loose lineout throw and powered over to score their 6th try.

Samuel Ruddell then received his Player of the Match Award from Danske Bank Business Manager Carol McCready, who was joined in the presentation of the Trophy and medals by Paul Hart, Chair of the Ulster Branch Youth Committee.
