Girls' Schools Rugby Opportunities

For the 2016/17 season there will be playing opportunities for secondary school age girls on both a contact and non-contact basis.

The long-established Tag Schools Cup will take place in February and March 2017. Later this month sees the first installment of the second year of the X7s which is a half-pitch cross-field version of contact 7s.

On Tuesday 25th October several schools will descend on Clogher Valley RFC to take part in the Provincial X7s tournament. Teams play in Junior (Born 1/7/2001 – 30/6/2004) and Senior (Born 1/1/1998 – 30/6/2001) categories with the top four Senior teams qualifying for the National Finals in Dublin on Thursday 10th November. Last year the Ulster-based schools were represented brilliantly on the National stage with Enniskillen Collegiate, Kilkeel High School, Magh Ene College Bundoran and Monaghan Collegiate taking part at the Aviva Stadium. Monaghan Collegiate finished in 3rd place, winning the Plate, whilst Enniskillen Collegiate finished in 2nd place after narrowly losing out in the Cup Final.  All four schools return to Clogher Valley this year.

February and March will see the Danske Bank Tag Girls’ Schools Cup regional qualifiers, quarter and semi-finals with the final taking place on Tuesday 21st March at Kingspan Stadium. Multiple-time champions Enniskillen Collegiate will defend their 2016 title under the name Enniskillen Royal GS following their recent merger with Portora Royal School. Due to the non-contact nature of the Tag Schools Cup, teams are made up of all secondary age girls and is played on a half-pitch 10-a-side basis.  Once again this year there will be the opportunity for those schools that prefer to play X7s to do so at the same venue and time as the regional Tag events.
