The team's resolve
We showed character, we never gave up and in the last 25 minutes the guys really rolled their sleeves up and put Glasgow under a lot of pressure. We probably weren’t accurate enough over the course of the whole game and were a bit disappointed with how we performed but we were put under a lot of pressure and came up with some good answers at the end.
Dave Shanahan
He is a team man, he is very professional, trains hard and sets standards all through the week. It’s no surprise when someone like that steps up. We are delighted for him and the team, we played a good team, we weren’t near our best but found a way to win which was very satisfying.
Bench impact
Going into the game we knew we would have to be on it. Andy Warwick, Tom O'Toole, James McCormick, Harry Sheridan and Izzy coming on, those guys are becoming more experienced and done really well at the back end of the game. The dressing room is happy and we have loads to work on. We’ll take the win and move on.
Getting off to a win is what we set out to do, Glasgow hit us early on, their strength and carrying, getting over the gainline but we stuck in the fight. It comes down to character, mentality and not giving up, we want to be a team that will throw everything at he opposition. We were inaccurate in many phases of the game but showed good character.
Learning experience
If you look at the team, Corrie Barrett started, never played in the URC, Aidan Morgan starts at ten, never played in the URC before so all these guys will improve and be better for the experience. It’s not often the champions come to your home in the first week, we’ll take that and learn from it.
Debutants
Werner Kok is high energy, good around the team, he’s fitted in really well. He’s been carrying a slight calf injury but it was great to bring him off the bench tonight. We’ll look to get him a start in the near future.
James McCormick had a great carry near the posts late on which he nearly finished off himself, I had James at Irish U20s with Jimmy Duffy. We know how good he is so for him to come on and do that was really pleasing.
Corrie Barrett has been with us for about seven weeks, he’s a scrummaging tighthead prop and has a lot to learn, at this level he is inexperienced but he’s come in worked really hard to get the opportunity tonight. He’ll learn from the experience.

His late winner
It’s good! We don’t make it easy for ourselves at times but it’s a good feeling, when you come on as a sub you are expected to make a difference, especially when the guys have put in a big shift for the majority of the game. The forwards must have done about thirty or forty pick and gos and then it came to me at the end and it was an easy put down, so they did all the hard work! But it’s a great feeling.
The TMO check
I didn’t know what the referee was checking! I thought maybe for a double movement, but the scoreline is there now!
Staying patient for game-time
I try to stay consistent with the way I think. The way I look at it I can just try my very best and that’s all I can do. I was happy to make an impact today.
Momentum
Its always good to win your first game of the season, we have a couple of tough games away in South Africa so it will be a tough challenge but we can kick on from this result.
There’s a lot of things we can work on, probably a few technical things around the breakdown area we could tidy up on, making sure we get good clean ball and not letting them hang around in there for too long. You have to give the lads credit, it wasn’t pretty but seeing we can do that is a big plus. The lads grinded out the win there.
