It has been confirmed that Ulster's pre-season fixture versus Gloucester at Kingspan Stadium on Saturday 18th August will also mark the first event in club legend Chris Henry's testimonial year.
In a new initiative, the Ulster and Irish flanker will become the first Ulster man to be awarded a testimonial year, in recognition of his incredible service to the club.
Henry first joined the Ulster Academy as an 18-year-old in 2003 after starring for Wallace High School. On the back of impressive performances for Queen’s University and Ballymena RFC, Henry was rewarded with his first Ulster cap against Harlequins in the Heineken Cup in January 2009. His international debut came just over a year later versus Australia and he has gone on to represent his province and country 183 and 24 times respectively.
Famously, Henry suffered a mini-stroke on the morning of a 2014 Test with South Africa in Dublin, but after surgery and a single-minded recovery regime he returned to the Ireland side for the 2015 World Cup.
Looking ahead to the game, Henry commented:
“I’m very grateful to Ulster Rugby for organising this testimonial event and it is set up to be a great day. Gloucester are a very good team and they’ll be bringing over some familiar faces with David (Humphreys), Jonny (Bell) and Paddy (McAllister) along with a very talented squad, so that will make it very interesting for both the Ulster players and supporters.”
Other highlights across the year, in conjunction with Chris’ chosen charity NI Chest Heart & Stroke, include a Testimonial dinner at Belfast City Hall, Golf Day, Comedy Night and a Trek with Andrew Trimble and Tommy Bowe to Mount Toubkal, Morocco.
