Herbst expecting another tough Italian battle

Having been sidelined with a calf injury for around six weeks, Wiehahn Herbst's return to playing action coincided with three successive bonus point wins for Ulster.

As Ulster hope to continue the winning form, the 28-year-old prop acknowledges he’s delighted to be back in the mix.

"Personally, it has been good to get back into the game. The first one was against Edinburgh, off the bench against Glasgow the week after, then away in Zebre last weekend.

“It’s good to get some minutes again. Especially for me as a prop, in that kind of game against a tough scrum it takes a few seconds for you to feel your legs again. It is games like that you just have to push on through."

While Herbst is understandably pleased with the collection of 15 points from the past three outings, he also admits there is still work to do, in particular from Sunday’s win in Parma where they came up against a typically tough Italian pack.

"There were a lot of positives to take out of it. It was good that we got five points. Tommy (Bowe) got his 150th cap, David Busby got a try on his debut and it was good to have Jared Payne back on the field.

"As a pack I think we did well. The scrums were solid, we scored a maul try, and it is always a challenge for us as a pack against the Italian sides because they like their scrum and their driving mauls.

"I think we stood up well as a pack but there are a lot of work-ons for us.

"We gave away a few silly penalties and there were some dodgy scrums that we didn't have control of."

With Treviso next up tomorrow night, Herbst knows it is vitally important that Ulster win the battle up front against another physically imposing visiting pack.

"I think we can expect the same from the Italian side this weekend, it is going to be a physical forward battle for us forwards.

"The focus is more on us. We know we have a quality back-line so, if we can give them good ball, they will do what they can.”

Almost 15,000 tickets have been sold for Friday's visit of Treviso to Kingspan Stadium, but there is still availability in some areas - please visit ulsterrugby.com/buytickets for details.
