Friday night will see the first Inter-Provincial fixture of the season at Kingspan Stadium as Ulster welcome Munster in Round 7 of the Guinness PRO12.
Rob Herring will return to captain the Ulster side from hooker and he admits he is “raring to go” ahead of the derby showdown.
Ulster have lost just once in the opening six rounds of the PRO12 and proudly sit joint-top of the Championship table, but only 3 points separate the first and fifth placed spot, currently occupied by Munster. As Herring notes, the battle in the top half of the table is as intense as it has ever been:
“It’s very tight. It’s what we have become used to in the past few years in the PRO12 with the top 6 or 7 sides all pushing hard for playoff spots, even this early on in the season. We take it one game at a time, as we always do, and this is as big as they come.”
The Ulster management team were forced to pick from a considerably smaller pool of players this week due to the upcoming international series and a mounting injury list, but Herring insists the team are still looking to get as much as they can out of the upcoming games:
“We are looking at these next few games (home to Munster, away to Edinburgh, home to Zebre) as a four week block and hopefully we will still be at the top of the table by the end of them. We trust the depth of squad that the management are building, so whatever team takes the field we will be confident they can get the job done.”
An outstanding 38-17 victory over Glasgow last weekend was a timely reminder of just what Munster are capable of, and Herring said it certainly garnered his attention:
“I was really impressed with them last week and it certainly makes it a difficult proposition for us. It comes back to the processes. We’ve just got to trust what we do and do it to the best of our ability, then hopefully after 80 minutes we will be on top.”
TICKETING:
Tickets for Friday’s game versus Munster are SOLD OUT. The game will be shown live on BBC2 NI and TG4.
