Q&A with Clogher Valley RFC
When did a women’s team start at the club? What was the driving motivation behind that?
The initiation of the women's team at Clogher Valley RFC in February 2022 stemmed from a crucial need to establish a pathway for the U18 players to seamlessly transition into the adult game. At the time, although there existed an U18's team, the absence of a direct route for these players to join the adult ranks meant they would have had to seek opportunities in other local clubs. Recognising this gap, the local community and the club showed considerable interest in the prospect of a women's team at Clogher Valley. As a result, the women's team was officially launched with coach Richard Haire providing a dedicated space for female players to continue their rugby journey within the club.
How many female members do you have? Are there different age groups/experience levels represented?
Clogher Valley Ladies section has experienced remarkable growth, with a current membership of 34 paid members. Remarkably diverse, the section spans a wide age range from 19 to 40 years old. What makes this achievement even more impressive is that 80% of these ladies had never engaged with a rugby ball until the past year. This influx of new participants underscores the success of the club in not only establishing a women's team but also in attracting individuals from various backgrounds and experiences to the sport, contributing hugely to the team.
