As we approach International Women's Day, we want to recognise the diverse and inspiring women making an impact on rugby in Ulster. Among them is Sarah, a remarkable 23-year-old who has become a central figure in the Clare Hares, a disability tag rugby team based at Ballyclare Rugby Football Club.
Rugby isn't just a game for Sarah—it's a source of joy, friendship, and personal fulfilment. When asked about her experience with the Hares, Sarah beams with excitement. "I love seeing my friends," she says. "Everyone on the team is so special in their own way."
For Sarah, rugby is a passion that she eagerly anticipates every week. "Yes, I look forward to it," she confirms. "I've been playing for years now. It makes me feel free. It is a really nice feeling." Sarah began playing rugby in 2014 and is one of the founding members of the Clare Hares.
Sarah's competitive spirit shines through when she talks about her favourite aspects of rugby. "I love playing matches and winning," she laughs. "Scoring tries is the best feeling ever."
Sarah encourages everyone to try rugby no matter what their background or experience, "I would tell them to give it a try," she says. "It's a lot of fun, and you'll make some great friends along the way."
Speaking to one of her coaches, he praised Sarah’s enthusiasm and dedication, describing her as a valuable member of the team. "She always gives her best effort and brings positivity to the group," he says. "She always gives her best effort on the night and looks forward to our social get together after training with her teammates."
And rugby is not where Sarah’s sporting success ends. In addition to her rugby pursuits, Sarah is also an active member of the Newtownabbey Racers Special Olympics Club, where she excels in athletics. She has represented Team Ulster at two All Ireland Special Olympics games, one in athletics and one in swimming 2014 & 2018 respectively. Her dedication to sports and her unwavering commitment to giving her best on the day are a testament to her resilience and determination.
For Sarah and her teammates, Ballyclare Rugby Club is more than just a sports venue – it's a second home. "Ballyclare Rugby Club is my most favourite place in the whole wide world," shares Sarah.
Through the Clare Hares, Ballyclare RFC is championing the values of inclusivity, friendship, and the sheer joy of playing rugby. Through her passion, perseverance, and positive attitude, Sarah exemplifies the spirit of women's rugby in Ulster, inspiring others to embrace the game, no matter what.
