Irish Legends to Climb Kilimanjaro for seriously injured players

Four Irish rugby legends will be leading their provinces in climbing Kilimanjaro in January 2019 in aid of the IRFU Charitable trust.

The four rugby legends are:

For Ulster: Stephen Ferris
For Leinster: Shane Byrne
For Munster: Marcus Horan
For Connacht: Mike McCarthy

As part of the expedition, organisers Earth’s Edge are looking for 64 adventurous men and women aged over 18 to answer the call to climb Kilimanjaro and raise vital funds for the IRFU Charitable Trust. 100% of all monies raised from the public will go to IRFU Charitable Trust. Four teams of 16 people are required from each of Ireland's proud provinces. The provincial team that gets the most people to the summit of Africa's highest peak will each receive a free wildlife safari in the Serengeti on Day 10 of the itinerary worth €;250. You must be from or live in the province you choose to climb with. The Grandfather rule also applies!

Kilimanjaro (5896m) is not only Africa's highest point, it is the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Towering over 4,500m above the Rift Valley and the surrounding landscape, it makes for an impressive sight. This 12-day expedition includes seven days of walking on the Machame trail, the most scenic route to the summit. The route provides spectacular scenery and a wide variety of different landscapes. We start in scrublands thick with African wildlife and then move into lush forests followed by flowering alpine tundra. Above 4,500m the landscape changes to snow and rock as we approach the summit.

Speaking about the event Linda Black from the IRFU Charitable Trust said "We are very excited about Ireland's Call to Kilimanjaro, climbing Kilimanjaro is a once in a lifetime opportunity. This event will make an enormous difference to the Trust and allow us to do so much more for seriously injured rugby players."
