... like no other! | Duane Vermeulen

The Ulster back-rower shares why Ulster Rugby is like no other...

The biggest thing is the vibe before the game. You pitch up and see all these little pop-up shops and trailers, guys getting their food, drinks and beers. It’s a great vibe you get in and around the stadium before kick-off on match nights. Once you run on to the field, the vibe you get from that and the support from people shouting for you, with you, standing alongside you through thick and thin, that is what Ulster is all about.

Before I signed with Ulster, my Agent told me that there’s nothing better than the vibe at Kingspan Stadium and the support from the people who stand behind you in those 80 minutes on the field is just fantastic. It’s not a big stadium but the noise it creates, you have to be there to experience it. That’s why we get sold-out stands almost every single week. The passion for the team and rugby in this region is spectacular.

At the beginning when I got here, I just wanted to find my feet and keep quiet a bit. You listen to what everyone says and you don’t want to give input too quickly and just test the waters to see where you’re going. It’s a pretty young team but it’s a dynamic team. Everyone has got a spot in this team and a say. There’s no hierarchy where only the older, more experienced guys have a chat. It’s open to everyone and that makes it great to be part of this team.

There’s a great culture and a massive energy in the squad. On the field, everyone tries to do everything to their best ability for their team-mates. It’s great to see and I love the vibe and being part of it a couple of months down the road. It’s nice to give a little bit more input. To see the feedback from the guys, it’s fantastic.

If you’re not part of this, you’re missing out! It’s a great feeling and hopefully we can put something together and give the fans something bigger to cheer about.
