Ulster started the match with a bang, their forwards dominating the early exchanges and forcing Leinster to defend deep. From a lineout, the Ulstermen drove over for James Clark to dot down in the fourth minute, giving Ulster an early lead of 0-5. Despite some great defensive work from Quinn Armstrong, Leinster were quick to respond with a try of their own in the 9th minute, coming from winger, Derry Moloney. O’Dwyer converted, pushing the home side into the lead, 7-5. Leinster would extend that lead, after a powerful maul, hooker Maguire sent it over the whitewash. With the conversion going wide, the score read 12-5.
In the 25th minute, Leinster’s number eight Lochlann Wardick was binned, and some strong carries from Rio McDonagh and Josh Dobbin saw Cal McKinney crash over the gainline. Daniel Green’s conversion made it 12-all.
Leinster would score two more in the half, coming from Maguire and Charlie Hempenstall, both converted by O’Dwyer, giving the home side a 14 point lead.
However, Ulster would have the final action, as Josh Dobbin crashed over just before the half-time whistle, converted by Dan Green.
HT: Leinster 26 - 19 Ulster
In the second half, Leinster gained momentum and pulled away from Ulster. Scores came from Black, Lindner, Ryan and McConnell, with three conversions from O’Dwyer took the score to 52-19 in the 54th minute.
There was still one jolt left in Ulster, peppering in runners before moving left for centre Ethan Spratt to put down for Green to convert on the hour, the score reading 52-26.
Leinster had two left in the tank, with Fogarty and Halpin dotting over before the final whistle.
Whilst the final result was not what the team had hoped. The U19s can be proud of their efforts throughout the competition and the hard-fought campaign the men have had.
