Match Report | Ulster 24-48 Toulouse

Ulster's three game winning streak comes to an end, after a terrific Toulouse performance at Kingspan Stadium in Round 3 of the Investec Champions Cup.

Ulster went into the sold out Champions Cup fixture in a confident mood after recent wins against Racing 92, Connacht and Leinster in the past thee matches.

However, Dan McFarland's men came up against a star-studded Toulouse side, who were in the mood to punish the home side when the opportunities came.

Antoine Dupont had broken Ulster hearts before in 2022, and the diminutive French wizard cast his magic over a packed Kingspan.

The loss means that Ulster sit fourth in Pool 2 after two defeats in the three rounds so far.

The mood in the build up to the match was positive, as Ulster marked 25 years since the famous 1999 European Cup victory and 100 years of their home ground.

Ulster began on the front foot, with some good early pressure, however that momentum was ground to a halt after blindside flanker, Dave Ewers, had to make an early exit following a head injury.

The away side's first proper attack led to a try, with winger Lebel, collecting a pinpoint cross-field kick from the sublime French international fly-half, Thomas Ramos.

Ramos converted to send the French giants into an early 0-7 lead.

Ulster fired back and after a period of possession in the Toulouse 22 were awarded a penalty that John Cooney nailed to get Ulster on the scoresheet. Ramos would respond with a penalty shortly after Sean Reffell was caught offside.

At one point the Ulster crowd was galvanised after a superb Nick Timoney turnover from a Toulouse maul in Ulster's 5m line, but the away side showed their star quality in the phases to follow.

A lineout maul resulted in the Toulouse hooker, Mauvaka, to dot the ball down in the midst of the maul, extending the home sides lead. Ramos' kick was wide of the posts.

Ulster suffered another setback, after a goaline dropout found the French back-rower, Anthony Jelonch, caught the ball and made a strong carry, before finding Mauvaka, who was in space. The hooker popped it off to Dupont, who slid in for his first try of the night.

Ramos converted the try with ease. Ulster had a lifeline just before the end of the half, after Tom Stewart bulldozed his way over from a maul, following a 5m tap penalty after period of Ulster pressure.

Ulster went into the break with something to build on.

HT: 10-22

Despite the home sides encouraging start to the second half, Toulouse weathered the pressure and began to assert themselves on the match. A smart piece of play from the Scottish full-back Blair Kinghorn found space in Ulster's backline and he popped the ball up to Dupont, who was running a trademark support line. There was no stopping the speedy scrum-half who notched his second try of the night. Ramos added the extra two to extend the lead further.

Dupont would turn to the provider in the next score, as he passed the ball inside following a lineout maul to release Mauvaka for his second converted try of the night.

Dupont was at it again a couple of minutes later, darting through the Ulster 22 to find Lebel's inside run, who gave Roumat a walk-in try. Ramos made the scoreline 10-41.

Ulster showed character despite the gulf in the scoreline. Another tap and go penalty saw a try for replacement ,Will Addison, who dived over in the left corner from a pinged Nathan Doak pass to narrow the score. Nathan Doak converted the well-needed try.

Pushing for the losing bonus point, Nick Timoney would add another to his tally for the season, with the back-rower scoring his sixth try in four games, after a break from Matty Rea.

Toulouse had the final say of the night however, as lock Meafou rubbed salt in the wounds with the away side's seventh try of the night.

Ulster will aim to bounce back in their european campaign with a trip to Harlequins next weekend, with the match looking like a must- win to advance to the knock-out stages of the competition.
