Back-rower, James McNabney, has signed a three-year Development deal with Ulster Rugby, after an impressive breakthrough into the Senior Men’s team earlier this season.
The former Ireland U20s Grand Slam-winner made his debut for his home club against Glasgow Warriors in Round 6 of the BKT United Rugby Championship in November, impressing at number eight. His new contract will keep him in an Ulster jersey until at least July 2027.
Of his contract news, McNabney, said:
“I’m delighted to sign my first Senior contract with Ulster, and I look forward to the challenges in the years ahead.”
Already a fan favourite, 21-year-old tighthead, Scott Wilson, has caught the attention of the Ulster faithful since making his debut in the URC victory over Munster at Kingspan Stadium in November, with the Academy man showing no fear with his carrying, line breaks, and scrummaging in the contest.
The lifelong Ulster fan has had a whirlwind of a breakthrough, with Wilson included in the squad for the recent South Africa tour, making appearances against the Sharks and Stormers.
Speaking on signing a new two-year Development contract with the province, which will keep the prop in the Ulster pack until at least the end of the 2025/26 season, Wilson said:
“I’m excited for what the future holds, and I’m pleased to have signed-on with Ulster for the coming seasons.”
Lorcan McLoughlin joins his fellow forwards in committing his future to Ulster Rugby. Identified through the IRFU IQ programme, the 22-year-old has signed a Development contract for the next two seasons.
The back-rower made his debut from the bench at a crucial period in the BKT URC victory over Emirates Lions at Kingspan Stadium in October. On staying at his home province, McLoughlin, said:
“I’m very excited to have signed a Senior contract with Ulster. I look forward to developing and growing with the team.”
Head of Rugby Operations and Recruitment, Bryn Cunningham, said:
“With all the well-documented change over the last few months, it’s critical that we have a strong base of young talent to move this province forward over the next number of years, and develop a level of consistency to our performance. Having a point of difference is key in the modern game and all three players possess this.
“With around ten of our likely starting team next season between the ages of 23 and 27, all having significant European experience, advancing these three Academy graduates adds to the prospect of an exciting future for Ulster Rugby.
“Next season will see the largest number of Academy players we have had in over five years. The progression of Scott, James, and Lorcan highlights our strategic objectives of bringing through the very best quality from our pathway and making sure they are coached hard to realise their potential.”
