Meet our Volunteers | Neil McCabe

Neil is a coach at Virginia RFC, working with the Xcessible Tag Rugby.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a father of four children, two of whom have special needs. As well as coaching with Virginia, I am an active member of my local GAA club.

How did you get involved in volunteering in sport?

My local GAA club.

What does your role entail?

Having fun with our tag rugby juniors and providing an inclusive environment for our players and their siblings.

What attracted you to the role?

I have two children with ASD.

How long have you been volunteering in sports?

30 years!

Did you have any rugby experience before you started volunteering >

I played with the Athlone RTC 2XV while at college.

Do you think it’s essential to have rugby experience to volunteer in your role or can anyone do it?

No not at all, training has been provided.

Why did you decide to volunteer in your club?

My son wanted to get involved and he preferred for me to be involved with him.

Have you gained any new skills through volunteering?

Some new coping and communication skills and lots of smiles!

Has volunteering improved your confidence?

Absolutely, volunteering is an important part of my own mental health self-care.

Has volunteering in sport led to any other opportunities either in sport or outside of sport?

Yes, I have volunteered as a Scout Leader as well.

Has volunteering in sport impacted positively on your life?

Volunteering in sport has been the most important way that I have felt a part of my local community.

What would you tell other people who would like to get involved in rugby but who don’t play or have no experience?

I would tell people not to get hung up on the sporting part of the volunteering to start. There are always roles for people willing to help and learn.
