Moorfields Primary pupils enjoy unforgettable day with British & Irish Lions

Last Friday, pupils from Moorfields Primary School in Ballymena had the extraordinary opportunity to take part in a training session with the British & Irish Lions in Dublin.

The unique event formed part of the Lions’ preparations for their 2025 tour of Australia and a primary school from each province was selected to attend. Ulster Rugby selected Moorfields PS after an impressive performance and attitude at our Primary Schools Festival held in the stadium last month.

“We were particularly delighted that the staff at Ulster Rugby selected our school for the excellent attitude of the pupils on the pitch, their sportsmanship, conduct and the manner in which they were coached positively and encouragingly,” said principal, Mr  Mark Beattie.

The pupils attended the session in UCD and had the opportunity to meet several current Lions players, including James Lowe, Josh van der Flier, Joe McCarthy, Andrew Porter, Jack Conan, Finn Russell and Ollie Chessum – offering them an unforgettable chance to rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in rugby.

“The chance to join in with these elite athletes at the pinnacle of their careers has the excitement in school hitting record levels. We have to say a big thank you to Ulster Rugby and The Lions for making this possible” Principal Beattie added.

For the pupils, it was a day filled with inspiration, pride, and the once-in-a-lifetime thrill of being involved with one of rugby’s most iconic teams. Their participation also highlighted the Lions’ ongoing commitment to celebrating grassroots rugby and the local communities that help foster the next generation of players.
