SONI’s volunteer award is back for its second year running, awarding ‘Community Champions’ in grassroots rugby across the Province.

SONI’s Community Champions Award which is organized by SONI alongside Ulster Rugby, honours the dedication of community rugby volunteers across Ulster with a substantial bursary for their club and an invitation to Ulster Rugby’s annual awards ceremony.

The SONI Community Champions initiative was launched last year by the System Operator for Northern Ireland following the announcement of their title sponsorship of the SONI Ulster Rugby Premiership.

This year, there will be two categories meaning two winners will each walk away with a £1,000 bursary for their local club, with two runners up being awarded £500.

The award is open to all rugby volunteers including coaches, fundraisers, grounds staff, club treasurers, the bus driver – all volunteers who have been involved with the club for at least six months are eligible to enter.

Neil Hanna, Ulster Rugby’s Business Development Manager, said they are pleased to see the award return for a second year:

"Following the success of last year, which was the first year of the Community Champions Award, we’re delighted to see SONI’s dedication to community rugby and to rewarding those who so selflessly serve their communities.

"I’d urge every local club to enter the awards and be in with a chance of winning a fantastic £1,000 bursary for the club. It’s important that volunteers are recognized and thanked for their amazing and selfless efforts – without them many of the clubs simply could not run.”

Robin McCormick, General Manager of SONI added: "We’ve thoroughly enjoyed activating our sponsorship with Ulster Rugby since we were named title sponsors of the Ulster Rugby Premiership last year. SONI is truly committed to recognizing the efforts of those valuable members of the community who work tirelessly for their local rugby club, benefitting so many children, young people and adults.  We’ve included two categories this year meaning there are two prizes of £1,000 up for grabs.  We want to see every club volunteer entering the award.”

The deadline for entries is Friday 10th February, anyone can nominate by filling out the online application form, at www.ulsterrugby.com/communitychampions.
