Ophir 7s Tournament: 15th & 16th August

On Friday 15th and Saturday 16th August, Ophir Rugby Club will host their Seven-a Side Rugby competition, at Magowan Park, The Cottonmount, Mallusk.



Celebrating its 40th Anniversary, this event has been held annually since 1974, as the traditional start of the Rugby season.  Following the success of previous 2-day events, the weekend will kick off on the Friday evening at 6.30pm with an Under 16s competition which should include teams from Ballyclare, Banbridge, Instonians, Larne, Lurgan, Malone, Randalstown and Ophir.  

On Saturday morning there will be an Under18s tournament starting at 9.30, with the teams competing for the Ken Bonar Memorial Trophy.  The senior competition for the Will Totten Memorial Trophy starts at 1.00.  Star teams which have previously competed include defending champions Queens University, Ballyclare RFC, Randalstown RFC, Acadamy RFC, Carrick RFC not forgetting Ophir themselves.

The matches will be played in two sections, on a league basis.  The winners and runners up in each section will contest the semi finals, with the final scheduled for 5.30pm. The Mayor of Newtownabbey, representing the main event sponsor, Newtownabbey Borough Council, will present the winners with the Will Totten Memorial trophy.

As well as the prospect of a great weekend of rugby, there will also be children's entertainment, face painting and the usual refreshment marquee, to make this a tremendous fun filled occasion for the entire family.
