Speaking to the media after the win, Richie Murphy, said he was happy with the response of the team following a frustrating first half for the province, who trailed going into half-time in Wales. Murphy also praised the performance of Cormac Izuchukwu, who started at blindside flanker, and that the team would turn their attentions to Leinster next weekend.
Scarlets analysis
"First half we were probably a bit disappointed, it is difficult when three times you don’t get the ball down but in the early parts of the game we weren’t accurate enough. We didn’t build any pressure, towards the back end of the half we started to build a bit of pressure. At half-time, with them down to two yellows, I thought the lads managed the next 20 minutes of the game really well."
League position
"It’s incredibly tight, everyone is trying to work out what you need, the fact is nobody really knows. You have to get what you get, go into each game trying to win and that’s what we have been doing. We are at home to Leinster, obviously we beat them at the RDS earlier in season, so there is lots to play for.
Knock-out rugby is about making sure you are in there and giving yourself a chance. You never know what will happen if you are away from home, it’s just a matter of getting there and giving it a crack."
On Cormac Izuchukwu starting at six
"Cormac has done very well, its something we are looking at. He would usually play in the second row but he’s very dynamic, an effective ball carrier, had hat trick of no tries for him today, which is disappointing for him, he’s a bit frustrated and he feels that third one he definitely got down.
He did well, he responds well and he is learning all the time."
Leinster focus
"It's definitely going to be rocking from the Ulster supporters, they are very strong and I’ve been in the Leinster changing room in Ulster a few times. It’s a difficult place to go. Leinster will come up and have loads of confidence but we know a win could get us into a great position."
Speaking after his 100th cap for his province, Mike Lowry reflected on the win and his pride on leading the team out in Wales.
Scarlets reaction
"The table is so tight, we needed the five points. It was a nice day to play rugby and thankfully we got over the line today against a good Scarlets side who wanted to throw the ball about.
We have to credit Scarlets, they had nothing really to play for but we knew how good their attack would be. The coaches there used to coach us inside out, so they knew what to come after us with. It was a tough game, hot conditions and they had us on the back foot in the first 20 minutes or so, but we were calm, took our breaths and once we got into our shape and played in the right areas of the pitch we knew what we could do."
On his vital interception, that led to Nick Timoney's try
"I think it was a big moment in the game, they may have been a man or two down. I thought I might as well take a gamble, it was an educated risk I suppose! We got inside pressure on their players, I felt I had time to make the read. I didn’t have the legs to finish it myself but we got over the line and that was important as it got us two scores ahead."
On making his 100th cap
"It’s such an honour, a few boys gave me some nice words before the game, I actually started to tear up a bit myself. I suppose it shows how good a group the boys are to help me through, they made it really special for me today and I can’t thank people enough. Family, friends, the team, support staff, everyone. It’s an absolute privilege to play for Ulster and hopefully many more to come."
On leading the side out
"Looking back I am really glad I did it because you never know when it’s your last game, or if you'll ever get to lead Ulster out. I was pressured into it a little form the lads! It's maybe not in my nature to lead the boys but I was very grateful to be able to do that and it was special."
Leinster excitement
"There is no bigger challenge than Leinster. An Interpro derby, hopefully Kingspan Stadium will be a sell-out and another massive game for us. The table is so tight with victories in and around us this weekend. Every point is vital. Every game is nearly a play-off. I can’t wait for it."
