However, that title went to Glasgow, when they went to Thomond Park and recorded a 22 – 5 victory over Munster to upset the odds and throw the race for the play offs wide open going into the final three rounds of matches.
Ulster tighthead prop, Ricky Lutton, played his 14th game of the season against Connacht. With Ulster second in the league, four points behind Munster and two ahead of Leinster, he says every game from here on in is like a cup final:
“The results at the weekend have left it a completely open race now for that top spot,” Lutton believes. “We have the most challenging run-in of all the sides in the mix which makes it difficult. We have essentially got three cup finals in the next number of weeks. We just have to approach them as one game at a time and keep ticking off the wins. If we win our three games we should have that top spot.”
Lutton played against Connacht in a front row that also featured Andy Warwick making his first start for Ulster at openside.
“We were delighted, Lutton says. “The scum held solid. Andy Warwick in there did a great job. I think the team showed great character to come back from the disappointment of the week before to rattle up a big score against a Connacht side that had been in pretty good form.”
Next up for Ulster is a massive game at Scotstoun against that in form Glasgow team:
Lutton says: “Glasgow has always been a difficult place to go. It is never easy. They have their internationals back and they are starting to hit their straps towards the end of the season. I am sure that they will be looking at the table thinking there is a home semi final for them if they can get three or four wins. They are not to be taken lightly and we know that it is going to be a real tough challenge going in there. However, if we but in a big performance, I think that we can win.”
