St. Eunan's College Letterkenny edged St. Columba's College Stranorlar 7-3 in a very competitive Donegal Schools' Senior Rugby Final.
One of the county's biggest schools rugby rivalries was played out at Dave Gallaher Memorial Park in Letterkenny where the defence of the players was of the highest quality and at the forefront of a highly tense encounter.
The first half was an absorbing affair but yielded no scores despite some close attempts.
St. Columba's edged into the lead over the Cathedral Town lads in 14th minute of the second half when Stephen McMenamin kicked a sublime 30 metre penalty.
Continued and intense pressure from St. Eunan's in the latter part of the second half eventually led to a great outside break by Ryan Mortimer. The outhalf fed his skipper Sean Henry and his well-timed pass sent Jason Doherty over for a decisive try.
Mortimer added the conversion to give the Letterkenny school a 7-3 lead with just five minutes remaining.
St. Columba's, the cup holders, pushed for a try of their own late on but to no avail and it was a relieved St. Eunan's team that lifted the Donegal Schools' Senior Cup for the first time.
