Ulster got off to a fast start, hammering away at the Connacht backline.
The home side put on good pressure, with a knock forward halting the maul after a 5m lineout.
They made an early breakthrough, after attacking phases from a lineout in the Connacht 22.
Fly-half, James Humphreys, pinged out a crisp pass out wide to the oncoming Ben Moxham, who sped in for the opening try.
The away side replied with a lineout maul try, with their experienced eight, Seamus Hurley- Langton getting it down for the Westerners. Sean Naughton hit the conversion to make it all square.
Connacht then showed the defensive side to their game, making vital interventions to stop Ulster scoring a second.
Their maul defence was solid after an Ulster 5m lineout and the away side managed to hold up the ball after Ulster's forwards drove for the line.
Connacht's defence was rewarded after they turned possession over with a kick downfield and aggressive line speed. They went ahead when centre, Byron Ralston, spotted a lapse and went over from a quick tap and go penalty in the Ulster 22. The try was converted by Naughton.
Ulster went into half time with a seven point deficit.

After the break, Connacht got into good territory and got their third converted try. Captain, Oisín McCormack, hitting through the contact to score their third after a 5m lineout.
Ulster's young side tried to get more fluency into their play but were finding it tough against a Connacht side who were winning penalties and turnover ball in the breakdown.
Hurley-Langton then notched his second try of the match, after he powered over from close range following Connacht press in the Ulster 22.
Ulster rued a costly mistake when an attack quickly turned into a painful counter, after the ball went loose in contact on the wing and Shane Mallon was set free for a run-in try.
Ulster kept pushing and got their reward after a kick to the corner from replacement fly-half, Jack Murphy, gave the home side a lineout from 5m out.
A well-worked lineout was then recycled by replacement scrum-half Michael McDonald, who sent out a lovely pass to Ben Moxham, who ran a good line and slipped in for his second try of the day. Murphy slotted the close range conversion in front of the posts.
Connacht blindside flanker, Bobby Power, then scored a late converted try to end a tough outing for Ulster 'A', who will regroup and prepare for their next match against away against Munster 'A' next Friday.
