On Connacht Eagles match

We were disappointed with what the final score, but you try and find some of the positives in the game too. We felt certainly in the first half we had a lot of possession, a lot of territory and we maybe didn't quite take our opportunities with the amount of time we spent in the Connacht 22. In their entries they scored from.

The first twenty minutes of the second half it felt like the game got away from us. We were a bit disjointed and we didn't manage the game as well as we would have wanted. We finished reasonably well with a nice score but the positives of these games are we had a chance to review the performance and build towards Munster.

On Academy players getting minutes

There are massive learnings for them in there. There was some nice ball carrying from individuals but the biggest part of learning would be around physicality around contact and particularly in the breakdown. That's something we are going to have to improve on and go after. That's the purpose of these games, you want to put the guys in that environment and expose them to that level of rugby. Hopefully it's an opportunity for them to build on and seek improvements.

Things to work on

We talked about how the breakdown was an area we can improve on and our work both on and off the ball. We've used the week to target those areas we want ti improve in. Munster are always competitive so its been an opportunity for us to target things and also that excitement of preparing alongside the senior squad as they get ready for Leinster this Friday has been a great focus.

On Josh Gibson and Cal Florence

The team is exciting because it presents opportunities for young players. Josh is one of our NTS players who was away with an Ireland age grade squad in the summer. He's pushing to be selected in the Irish U19s squad this year and hoping to progress into the academy for future. This gives us a chance to see where these guys are at. He's been playing well for Banbridge RFC in the AIL and this could create a bit of a platform for him.

Cal has been playing at Queen's University, playing alongside the likes of Jack and Wilhelm alongside him. He's somebody that we have used last year, he is a reliable guy, physical in how he carries the ball so it's great to give these guys playing club rugby some exposure in our environment.

Lukas Kenny makes a start after a long injury lay-off, how have you seen him develop?

It's almost close to a year to when Lukas was out of the game. He made a really promising start playing club rugby with Queen's last year and scored some fantastic tries, showing the strengths of his game. It's been a long slog for Lukas but he deserves a lot of credit for applying himself, showing resilience and getting himself back fit. We don't want to put too much pressure on him as he has been out of the game for a long time.

There are areas of his game we want to see improvement in but he has some fantastic physical attributes, against Connacht we could see his ability to beat people one on one and keep the ball alive in contact. We are really excited about him and hope he can get on the ball as much as possible.

Jack Murphy starts at ten, how has he settled in after joining in the summer?

He's a player that I have really enjoyed working with personally. This week and even last week you can see the elements of leadership he is starting to build. This week he has taken charge of driving the team, getting our launch play in, making sure others are all on a good level of understanding. With the attack, he's driven that like a senior ten, so it's been fantastic to see that from him with that confidence. I'm excited to see how he goes.

With the importance of academies looking at producing props, how have you seen the development of the likes of Jacob, Cameron and Jack?

Front row is the most challenging position to develop at this age, individuals all develop at different rates. Jacob went to the Junior world cup, got injured and last week was his first minutes for a while.

I think for these guys getting regular game-time is the most important thing and we have seen benefits of that exposure at AIL. Stepping into the 'A' team space is where we want to see them perform and have a good impact around the set piece. These games are very valuable for these guys like Jacob, Cameron and Jack.
