Ulster Carpets Club/School Window Programme in full flow

The Ulster Carpets Club/School Window is in full flow this season, as many clubs throughout the province are buzzing with blitzes and festivals, offering young players a fantastic opportunity to experience the game in a new and exciting environment.

This initiative, spearheaded by Ulster Rugby, the governing body for the sport in the province, is designed to bridge the gap between school and club rugby. The Club/School Window provides a unique platform for young players, who typically only participate within the school setting, to join in activities at their local clubs during March and April, effectively extending their playing season and offering a fresh perspective on the sport.

The recent festival held at Dromore Rugby Club on a sunny Friday evening perfectly exemplified the spirit of the Club/School Window. Ulster Carpets, the proud sponsors of both this initiative and the wider Community Outreach Programme, were in attendance, witnessing firsthand the impressive talent and enthusiasm of the young players taking part.

The Club/School Window is more than just extra playing time; it's a strategic participation programme aimed at fostering a lifelong love for rugby. By allowing school-based players to integrate with their local clubs, Ulster Rugby hopes to encourage continued involvement in the sport beyond their school years. This initiative also presents a valuable opportunity for clubs to connect with potential future members and build a stronger base for their youth sections.

Meanwhile, the Ulster Carpets Community Outreach Programme works in tandem, focusing on introducing the game to new participants. Through a series of school and community-based coaching sessions, this programme broadens the appeal of rugby and provides a crucial entry point for those who may not have had the chance to experience it before.

Nick Coburn, Group Managing Director and Deputy Chairman of Ulster Carpets, said, “Ulster Rugby’s Community Outreach Programme and their Club/School Window initiative is a proven pathway for the next generation of players.

“We remain committed to supporting our local community and, in particular, helping young people to learn the commitment and respect that sport promotes.”

Keith Shorten, Head of Commercial at Ulster Rugby, echoed this sentiment, stating, “We are grateful to Ulster Carpets for their continued investment in growing our grassroots game across the province, which will see thousands of young people continue to enjoy playing rugby in the seasons ahead. As our rugby coaches travel across Ulster to deliver the sponsored participation programmes, it is fitting that it will be with the support of a local partner who understands the importance of a pipeline of talented young players for what we are aiming to achieve as both the Governing Body for the sport and a professional rugby club.”

The beauty of the Club/School Window lies in its flexibility. Clubs across Ulster are offering a diverse range of activities throughout March and April, both on and off the pitch, allowing players to choose the rugby experience that best suits them. This includes opportunities for players to reconnect with clubs where they may have played mini rugby, as well as forging new connections for those introduced to the sport through their schools. The focus remains firmly on fun and participation, creating an inclusive environment for all.

With the Ulster Carpets Club/School Window in full flow, the future of Ulster rugby looks bright. The enthusiasm and talent on display at events like the Dromore festival are testament to the success of this initiative and the vital role it plays in nurturing the next generation of rugby stars and, more importantly, fostering a lifelong love for the game within the Ulster community.
