Ulster Select XV welcome Mid-West Thunderbirds as the Women's Rugby World Cup rolls into town

An Ulster Select XV will welcome touring side, the Mid-west Thunderbirds from the US, to Belfast as the Women's Rugby World Cup rolls into town this coming weekend.

The Midwest U24 Select Side was formed in 1998. The idea was to build a program that would feed the newly formed USA U23 National Team while providing a link between the colleges and club teams within the Midwest.

The team's first competition was in November of 1998 when the team travelled to Atlanta, Georgia to compete in a tournament hosted by Emory University.

The final touring team has been selected from around a 3000 player-base, reduced through an extensive selection process involving weekend selection camps and recommendations.

The match, to be hosted by Malone RFC, will take place at 2.30pm on Saturday 19th August and promises to add some international flavour to the local women’s rugby scene.
