Ulster Rugby legend Rory Best has been inducted into the Heineken Rugby Players Ireland Hall of Fame, in recognition of an outstanding career representing Ulster, Ireland and the British & Irish Lions.
Best was formally inducted at a special ceremony hosted by Rugby Players Ireland at the InterContinental Dublin today (Friday 6 November), alongside former Ireland internationals Niamh Briggs and John Muldoon.
The occasion brought together family, friends and former teammates to celebrate three distinguished careers and the lasting contribution each has made to Irish rugby.
One of the most influential figures in Ulster and Irish rugby, Best enjoyed a distinguished 14-year international career, winning 124 caps for Ireland and representing his country at four Rugby World Cups.
A key member of Ireland's Grand Slam-winning sides in 2009 and 2018, he also captained the national team to its historic first-ever victory over New Zealand in Chicago in 2016. He further represented the British & Irish Lions on two tours, in 2013 and 2017.
At provincial level, the former Ulster captain made more than 200 appearances for his home province, becoming a hugely respected figure through his leadership, consistency and commitment to the Ulster jersey.
Having come through the Ulster Rugby pathway, Best went on to become one of the defining players of his generation, leading the province through some of its most memorable seasons and establishing himself as one of the most recognisable figures in Irish rugby.
Reflecting on his induction, Best said:
“It's a very special occasion for me and my family, and I'm hugely grateful to Rugby Players Ireland for bringing everyone together.
“Some of my greatest memories from my playing days are actually the moments I shared with my kids after games. As they get older, it's lovely to have opportunities like this to give them a fuller understanding of what the game meant to me, the people I shared it with and how much those experiences shaped our lives.”
The ceremony was hosted by former Ulster and Ireland teammate Darren Cave, with current Ulster captain Iain Henderson among those joining the stage to share memories and reflections on the inductees and their contribution to the game.
First established in 2003, the Rugby Players Ireland Hall of Fame recognises individuals whose achievements, influence and contribution have left a lasting mark on Irish rugby.
Rory's induction is a fitting recognition of an exceptional career and the significant legacy he has built at Ulster Rugby and across the wider game. Now serving as the club's General Manager, he continues to play an important role in shaping the future of the province and the team representing Ulster today.
Congratulations, Rory!
