VodaFone Women's Interprovincial Preview - Munster (A)

Despite coming out on the wrong side of a 15-10 scoreline against Connacht last week, there were still plenty of positives for the Ulster Women’s team to take away from a fiercely competitive interprovincial clash.

The challenge now for Murray Houston and his team is to build on those positives as they prepare to face current Vodafone Interprovincial champions Munster on Saturday afternoon at Virgin Media Park. (Kick-off 2.30pm).

Disappointed not to have added to the two tries they scored, Houston will take comfort of the performances of Amy McConkey, Caitlin Crowe and Leah Irwin, who both made their senior debuts in the five-point defeat.

Introduced from the bench in the second half, Irwin and McConkey showed great tenacity in defence, while last season’s SAM Mouldings Ulster Youth Player of the Year Crowe also delivered a composed and confident display at outside centre.

The sight of Claire Boles in an Ulster jersey was also a major plus for Houston’s team. In the absence of India Daley, her experience and leadership proved vital to the team.

Houston would also have been pleased to get a half each from returning internationals Sadhbh McGrath and Fiona Tuite.

The Opposition

Munster laid down a marker in their Vodafone Interpro by dismantling rivals Leinster 39-19 in their opener last Saturday afternoon.

The reigning champions were at their ruthless best as they powered their way to a seven-try victory with hooker Beth Buttimer helping herself to four touchdowns.

Head Coach Matt Brown was delighted at how his side went about their business as they chase down a 17^th interpro title.

Players to Watch

Alana McInerney

McInerney was a constant thorn in the Leinster defence during Saturday’s convincing display.

Her strong running from centre laid the foundation for many a Munster attack, and she also got her name on the scoresheet by claiming her side’s second try of the game.

Enya Breen

Fly-half Breen was again central to all that was good about Munster’s game last Saturday.

The 33 times capped Irish international was a prominent figure in Munster’s opening day success and contributed two conversions to her team’s total.

Beth Buttimer

At just 20-years old, hooker Buttimer is already making a name for herself as one for the future.

The dynamic UL Bohs player scored four-tries in last Saturday’s defeat of Leinster and is being tipped for international honours in the upcoming season.
