Clubs get ready to host 2025 Ulster Carpets Club/School Window

2025 marks the 4th year of the annual Ulster Carpets Club/School Window participation programme. The programme, developed in 2021 will create a space in the rugby season for young players across school & club rugby to come together in a safe, fun...

The Club/School Window means that players who play only in School, can now join in on activity at their local club in March & April, as a new way to experience the game, at the end of the school’s season.  The fun, participation focus of this delivery also offers a unique opportunity for new players to take their first steps into the game.

The programme sees clubs across the province offer a range of activities, both on and off the pitch during the months of March & April, designed to allow players to choose the rugby experience that is right for them.  During this time, we hope to see players re-connect to those clubs where they previously played mini rugby, as well as new connections to be made for those players who have been introduced to rugby through their school.

Ulster Rugby’s Annual Participation Review 2020/21 revealed a significant drop out of players and teams throughout the course of school lives, and subsequent transition into adult rugby.  The club/school window has subsequently become a fixture in the Ulster Rugby season, to encourage school players to engage with local clubs and stay in touch.

Ulster Rugby Operations Manager Barry Willis:

"Since the release of the Ulster Rugby Adult Participation Review in April 2021, the Ulster Branch has been dedicated to implementing the recommendations outlined in the report. One key action has been the development of the Club/School Window, designed to bridge the gap that young players often feel between their schools and local clubs.

This initiative now provides a dedicated space in the rugby calendar for players from both Club and School pathways to come together, build new connections, and ultimately enjoy the game at their local clubs.

Our clubs across Ulster have been working hard in preparation, crafting a dynamic programme that features a range of exciting activities, both on and off the pitch, tailored to attract and engage local young players. These activities may include challenge matches with other clubs, more relaxed formats like tag or touch rugby, and social events designed to bring young players into the welcoming environment of the rugby club, where hospitality and a strong sense of community are at the heart of the experience.

The programme is designed to offer something for everyone, allowing young players to select the rugby experience that best suits their interests and preferences."
