A round-up of the latest Danske Bank Schools’ rugby action, by Ulster Schools’ PRO Barney McGonigle:

Ulster Age Grade

On Monday 12 January, Larne Grammar School played Ulster U18 Clubs at the Meadowbank Arena in Magherafelt.

Larne Grammar School emerged as 21-19 winners at the end of this close encounter.

Conor Frazer (Malone), Ayrton Pienaar (Virginia), and Alex Courtney (Dungannon) scored the Ulster tries with Conor Frazer adding two successful conversion kicks.

Ryan McDowell, Ralph Wilson and the impressive Corbin Marsden scored the Larne Grammar School tries with Jonnie Kennedy adding all three successful conversion kicks.

Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Medallion Competitions

In the Medallion Shield Round of Sixteen, all eight games took place on Saturday 17 January.

Ballyclare High School hosted Methodist College in a game MCB won, 26-0.

Ballymena Academy played Royal Belfast Academical Institution in a game RBAI won, 31-10.

Campbell College played Coleraine Grammar School in a late kick off game Coleraine Grammar won, 19-12.

Grosvenor Grammar School played Enniskillen Royal Grammar School in a game Enniskillen won, 7-3.

Omagh Academy played Rainey Endowed School and recorded a 31-7 victory.

Royal School Armagh played Regent House School and won the game, 19-17.

Sullivan Upper School entertained Banbridge Academy and won the game, 25-0.

Wallace High School hosted Larne Grammar School and recorded a 41-5 win.

In the Medallion Bowl, Belfast Royal Academy played Portadown College and recorded a 22-5 victory.

Down High School played Friends’ School Lisburn in a game Friends’ won, 29-19.

Limavady Grammar School played Bangor Grammar School and won the game, 13-7.

Royal School Dungannon played Antrim Grammar School and won the game, 52-14.

The remaining three games in the Medallion Trophy quarter-finals took place on Saturday 17 January.

Belfast High School played Dromore High School and recorded a 22-14 victory.

Dalriada School played Cambridge House Grammar School in a game Cambridge House won, 38-7.

Foyle College had a “walkover” result against Bangor Academy.

Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 2XV Competitions

On Thursday 15 January, Omagh Academy 2XV played Belfast High School 2XV in the quarter-final of the 2XV Trophy.

Omagh Academy 2XV won this game, 40-0.

On Saturday 17 January, Ballyclare High School 2XV hosted Campbell College 2XV in the quarter-final of the 2XV Cup.

The final score in this game was 19-7 to Campbell College.

In the same competition, Rainey Endowed School 2XV played Ballymena Academy 2XV in a game the Ballymena Academy won, 21-10.

Royal School Armagh 2XV hosted Methodist College 2XV in a game Methodist College won, 38-10.

Wallace High School 2XV played Royal Belfast Academical Institution 2XV in a game the RBAI won, 43-3.

In the quarter-finals of the 2XV Plate, three games took place.

Down High School 2XV played Belfast Royal Academy 2XV in a game BRA won, 50-7.

Royal School Dungannon 2XV played Friends’ School Lisburn 2XV and won the game, 27-8.

Regent House School 2XV played Enniskillen Royal Grammar School 2XV and recorded a 27-13 victory.

In the quarter-finals of the 2XV Trophy, the remaining three games took place.

Bangor Grammar School 2XV played Dalriada School 2XV and won the game, 40-0.

Limavady Grammar School 2XV played Banbridge Academy 2XV and won the closely contested game, 8-7.

Foyle College 2XV played Portadown College 2XV and recorded a 19-10 victory.

Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 3XV Competitions

On Tuesday 13 January, Foyle College 3XV hosted Enniskillen Royal Grammar School 3XV in a 3XV Trophy Round of Sixteen game.

Foyle College won this game, 22-15.

On Wednesday, two 3XV Cup games took place.

Methodist College 3XV played Royal School Armagh 3XV in the quarter-final of the 3XV Cup.

Methodist College 3XV won this game, 43-19.

At the same stage of the Cup, Campbell College 3XV hosted Royal Belfast Academical Institution 3XV in a game which finished as a 17-17 draw.

1XV Friendlies

On Wednesday, Royal School Armagh played Enniskillen Royal Grammar School in their previously postponed game.

Royal School Armagh recorded a 42-0 victory with tries from Charlie Reaney, Nathan Hamilton, Finlay Starrett, Ryan Hamilton and Sam Grey.

Tom Kennedy was successful with all his conversion kicks.

Wallace High School travelled to play Cistercian College Roscrea at Castleknock College in Dublin.

Cistercian College won the game, 34-10.

Wallace scored one try through Bailie Reid with Alex Stevenson adding the successful conversion kick as well as one penalty goal.

The Cistercian points came through tries from Ronan O’Neill, with two, Jack Hayes, Harry Finlay, with two and James Miller.

Aaron Moloney was successful with two of his conversion kicks.

Both teams, and their coaches, would like to thank Castleknock College for the provision of facilities and hosting the game.

On the same afternoon, Friends’ School Lisburn and Ballyclare High School played out a controlled 3 x 20 minutes training game which both teams found useful in preparation for forthcoming competition games.

Players such as Lewis Flynn, Josh McColgan, Tom Falls and Jude Semple impressed all the coaches with their performances for Ballyclare High as did players such as Adrian Lough, Ollie Louge, Daniel Kerr and Will Smyth with their performances for Friends’ School.

A number of 1XV friendly games took place on Saturday 17 January.

Belfast Royal Academy played Dromore High School in a game BRA won, 49-7.

Caleb McWhinney, Connor McVicker, Daniel Bell, Ben Forsythe-Horan, Blake McCloskey, Harry O’Kane and James Murray were the Belfast Royal Academy try scorers with Connor McVicker successfully adding all the conversion kicks.

Dromore High School, for whom players such as Andrew Waugh and Alfie Clarke impressed, gained their points through a penalty try.

Lurgan College played Omagh Academy in a game Omagh won, 29-19.

The Lurgan points came through tries from Daniel Wilson, Seth Martin and Andrew Bird to which Ben Maxwell added two successful conversion kicks.

The Omagh points came through tries from Ryan Mitchell, Sam Harper, with two, Lewis Mc Ivor and Joshua Orr.

The talented Sam Harper was also successful with two of his conversion kicks.

Banbridge Academy and Down High School played out a 3 x 20 minutes-controlled training game which both teams found useful in preparation for their forthcoming competition games.

Players such as Sam Leslie, Luke Wills, Max Ireland and Patrick McElroy impressed all the coaches with their performances for Banbridge Academy as did players such as Matthew Horner, Ruben Watson, Paddy Dooley and Joe Bailie with their performances for Down High School.

Rainey Endowed School and Coleraine Grammar School played out a 3 x 20 minutes-controlled training game which both teams found useful in preparation for their forthcoming competition games.

Players such as Eli Culbertson, Adrian Martin, James Fullerton and James Bell impressed all the coaches with their performances for Rainey as did players such as Joshua Hawe, Richie Smyth, Joshua Chambers and James Coates with their performances for Coleraine Grammar.

Royal School Dungannon and Friends’ School Lisburn out a 3 x 20 minutes-controlled training game which both teams found useful in preparation for their forthcoming competition games.

Players such as James Gibson, Blake Redmond, Matthew Smith and Joel Clarke impressed all the coaches with their performances for Dungannon as did players such as Harry Brady, Scott Henderson, Zac Wilson and Oliver Logue with their performances for Friends’.
