Ulster Rugby partnership with Mid-Ulster Council boosts local rugby participation

A year-long collaboration between Mid-Ulster Council, Ulster Rugby, and local clubs Clogher Valley RFC, Dungannon RFC, and Rainey RFC is set to make a lasting impact on the region's rugby community.

The partnership, which will conclude in May 2025, has introduced more school-aged children to rugby than ever before.

Funded through this partnership, part-time Club Participation Officers Luke Russell, Ryan Ross, and Dean Talbot have been instrumental in delivering rugby programs across the area. Between September 2024 and March 2025, they have engaged with 16 primary schools and 16 secondary schools, reaching over 3,000 young participants, both boys and girls.

The initiative, designed to expand the reach of local rugby clubs, has successfully extended the sport’s presence within the local community. Mid-Ulster Council has supported the project for five of the last six years, during which time all three clubs have developed strong Women & Girls rugby sections, catering to both youth and adult players while also contributing to consistent growth in the boys sections. Dungannon RFC has also re-established the Stevenson Park Sharks, a disability rugby team, to further enhance access to rugby in the area.

This season, the clubs have already seen impressive growth in participation. Secondary school boys’ registrations have risen by 12%, while age-grade girls’ registrations have increased by 15%.

With continued support from Mid-Ulster Council and local rugby clubs, the sport of rugby continues to thrive in the region, providing opportunities for players of all ages and abilities.
