URC Preview | Emirates Lions (A)

A look ahead to Ulster Rugby's next BKT United Rugby Championship fixture, as the team take on the Lions at Emirates Airline Park in Round 5 this Saturday 25th October. (KO: 12.45pm)

Richie Murphy's team will be aiming to continue the momentum after Round 4's superb 26-34 bonus-point victory against the Sharks in Durban, which made it three successive victories in the URC.

Taking maximum points from matches against Dragons, Vodacom Bulls and Hollywoodbets Sharks leaves the province in a healthy fifth position in the early stages of the league, with one game in hand following the Round 2 postponement against Edinburgh.

Our Opposition

The Lions got their campaign kick started in Round 4, winning back on home soil against the Scarlets after an opening three defeats against Cardiff, Zebre Parma and Benetton away from home.

Round 4's 29-18 bonus-point victory against Scarlets showcased the fight in the side in a close contest, with two late tries from replacement hooker Morne Brandon sealing the win.

Head Coach, Ivan van Rooyen, can be pleased with his side's ability from attacking lineouts, with a strong set piece over the opening four rounds.

The Lions sit 11th in the table after the opening four rounds, with six points on the board.

Ulster Rugby 24-17 Emirates Lions, United Rugby Championship, November 2023

Ulster made a second half comeback in the rainy weather conditons to beat the Lions in Belfast back in November 2023.

The Lions struck early in the 11th minute, winger Richard Kriel, touching down after a pinpoint cross‑kick. Fly-half, Sanele Nohamba, converted to make it 7‑0.

Ulster got back on level terms after James Hume powered over after sustained pressure. The conversion from Nathan Doak tied the game at 7‑7.

The away side would then snatch the lead again, forward, Hanru Sirgel, scoring from close‑range after multiple phases into Ulster’s 22. Nohamba converted to make it 14‑7 heading into the break.

Ulster regrouped and made the perfect response as wing,Jacob Stockdale, went over in the corner after only two minutes of the second half. Doak's conversion tied things at 14-14.

Nohamba then edged the visitors back in the lead with a penalty.

Ulster scored their third try through Rob Herring, who scored a trademark try as he finished off a lineout maul. Doak's third successful conversion edged Ulster out to 21-17.

Replacement John Cooney added more scoreboard pressure, with his penalty stretching the advantage to 24-17.

The province were able to defend the Lions attack in the dying minutes, and held on for the victory at home.
